Cultural Awareness Week – Oct. 7-10

CAW“Promoting Community Through Social Justice”
October 7th – 10th

It is an exciting time of the year, as we embark on our Third Annual – Cultural Awareness Week program, held during the week of October 7 – 10, 2013.  Our theme for this year is “Promoting Community Through Social Justice,” which focuses on the energizing our campus community and beyond to become global citizens.  Our opening program, “Unveiling the Wall of Peace and Inclusivity,” begins with an exhibit, a welcome from Hilbert College President Cynthia Zane, and a keynote address by Crystal Rodriguez, the Executive Director of the City of Buffalo’s Commission on Citizen’s Rights and Community.  Her presentation, “Social Justice: Living Through the Eyes of the Community” will address her experiences as a community builder and examine the roots of the movement as it relates to social justice through the eyes of the community.  Not only will we have the pleasure of hearing about her culminating experiences, but our students have the opportunity to participate as well.  The Wall of Peace & Inclusivity provides an opportunity to take time to reflect upon what it means to be inclusive and understand the importance of respecting cultural differences. Using a piece of cloth provided, students will create a visual representation of what diversity means to them and answer the following questions:

  1. What brings us all together as a community at Hilbert?
  2. How do you promote respect for differences?

The exhibit is made up of several unique pieces of cloth designed by students that expresses their perspectives on diversity and inclusivity.  This is only the beginning of what the week has in store.  Other events include but are not limited to: film viewings, panel discussions, drumming lessons, and much more.

The program is a collaborative effort between several offices including: Admissions, Academic Services, Campus Ministry, Career Development Center, Center for Excellence and Learning (CEL), Common Ground Club, English Department’s Visiting Artist Series, Hilbert Reads, Honors Program, Human Services and Rehabilitation Services Department, Institutional Advancement, Leadership Development, Multicultural Affairs, Residence Life, Student Activities, and Student Success and Retention.  Without the support of the entire campus community this event would not be possible.
